³º Back in 2012, the young sextet from Austria º ³
³º surprised with an unusually strong debut album º ³
³º for a band whose members had had no previous º ³
³º experience in the music business, and the º ³
³º Dragony debut "Legends" turned out a remarkable º ³
³º release, even if there were still some issues to º ³
³º iron out both in terms of performance and º ³
³º production. º ³
³º º ³
³º Fast-forward to three years later, and in º ³
³º September 2015, the dragons from Austria are º ³
³º ready to fly again - and they definitely took º ³
³º the hints and criticism, such as they were, on º ³
³º their first album to heart. º ³
³º º ³
³º The band clearly spent more time both on º ³
³º developing the songs and also on the production º ³
³º process, even enlisting prominent (and less º ³
³º prominent) help from within the metal scene: º ³
³º Lukas Knoebl, guitarist of fellow Austrian º ³
³º symphonic metallers Illuminata provided a º ³
³º fantastic orchestral score to the ten new songs º ³
³º that have been well tweaked and streamlined in º ³
³º their structure, and present a more conclusive º ³
³º overall image than the songs on the debut album. º ³
³º The orchestration serves the songs well, rarely º ³
³º if ever taking over save for a few select º ³
³º passages like for example in the "Game of º ³
³º Thrones"-themed "Wolves Of The North" or the º ³
³º epic, up-tempo rocker "Babylon" (yes, bearing º ³
³º one of power metal's most clichéd song titles). º ³
³º º ³
³º Instead, Dragony rely quite heavily on solid º ³
³º songwriting, some heavy-duty riffing (examples º ³
³º for this are the sombre "Warlock" or the "Dark º ³
³º Souls"-themed "Kiln Of The First Flame"), and - º ³
³º thankfully - also on quite a few tongue-in-cheek º ³
³º moments reminiscent of Christopher Bowes' º ³
³º Gloryhammer, which are so necessary in this day º ³
³º and age of way too many cheesy power metal bands º ³
³º taking themselves way too seriously. º ³
³º º ³
³º Make no mistake, though - Dragony are quite º ³
³º cheesy themselves, but you can tell they are º ³
³º deliberately so: Starting from the atmospheric º ³
³º and fantasy-esque artwork done by Hungarian º ³
³º Peter Sallai (e.g. Sabaton), to song titles such º ³
³º as "Dr. Agony" (by Dragony, no less) and º ³
³º "Unicorn Union", a synth-driven anthem dedicated º ³
³º to the eponymous fans of the band, and even º ³
³º enlisting Savatage legend Zak Stevens on guest º ³
³º vocal duties on the ten minute epic "The Silent º ³
³º Sun", which is based on Dante's "Inferno" and º ³
³º musically draws parallels to Tobias Sammet's º ³
³º Avantasia, most particularly their song "The º ³
³º Wicked Symphony". The final touch on the º ³
³º production was applied by Jan Vacik of Serious º ³
³º Black, and turned out clear and crisp as can be º ³
³º expected of a solid power metal release in the º ³
³º year 2015. º ³
³º º ³
³º Dragony have upped every aspect of their game on º ³
³º their second album, manage to play quite º ³
³º traditional and sometimes deliberately over- º ³
³º the-top melodic metal with a twist that's just º ³
³º fresh enough to set them apart from many of º ³
³º their contemporaries, and their songwriting º ³
³º skills definitely ascertain "Shadowplay" a top º ³
³º spot in the lists of 2015's power metal º ³
³º releases. Fans of the aforementioned bands such º ³
³º as Avantasia, Gloryhammer, Hammerfall, Edguy or º ³
³º Kamelot should definitely give "Shadowplay" a º ³
³º listen. º ³
