³º In the last year I've started listening to º ³
³º Imperia in decreasing amounts. Whenever their º ³
³º music appears on shuffle I'll listen to it, and º ³
³º occasionally I consider listening to their stuff º ³
³º more often, but for the most part that hasn't º ³
³º happened. However, the new album Tears of º ³
³º Silence has given me a reason to listen to them º ³
³º again, and it does live up to the expectations º ³
³º that I had beforehand. It's not as incredible as º ³
³º I thought their last album was at the time I º ³
³º reviewed it, but it doesn't hold up badly º ³
³º against the rest of a strong discography. º ³
³º º ³
³º First off, a round of applause for Oliver º ³
³º Philipps and his incredible orchestral º ³
³º arrangements. They really help to make Tears of º ³
³º Silence a success. There's a lot of folk º ³
³º influence brought into the music this time º ³
³º around which hasn't been done by Imperia before, º ³
³º but I quite like it and I think that they work º ³
³º it well. Aside from that there's still a lot of º ³
³º tinkering piano, but no over-the-top synths that º ³
³º made songs like 'Touch of Your Hand' so epic. I º ³
³º guess you'd call it a trade-off, as it wouldn't º ³
³º work with the other things that the º ³
³º orchestration does here. º ³
³º º ³
³º Guitars are heavy, but also buried under the º ³
³º orchestral in a way. It's odd, because they're º ³
³º clearly powerful but yet aren't really felt all º ³
³º that much as a result. Most of the emphasis of º ³
³º Imperia's work as a symphonic metal band is º ³
³º naturally from the orchestral arrangements, so º ³
³º perhaps it's not all that surprising that the º ³
³º guitars don't get much chance to shine. Still, I º ³
³º know that the guitarist Jan Yrlund can add more º ³
³º influence than he gets to here, and it's a shame º ³
³º that we only get to hear one or two moments º ³
³º across the entirety of Tears of Silence where he º ³
³º takes the lead. º ³
³º º ³
³º Naturally, the main element of the band though º ³
³º is Helena's vocal work. She is a great singer, º ³
³º and she deserves the praise that I've given her º ³
³º previously. She's got one of the most incredible º ³
³º ranges in the genre, and she has the ability to º ³
³º blend each level seamlessly into the next. The º ³
³º cackles are gone from this record, and I think º ³
³º that's one of the main reasons that the whole º ³
³º performance sounds smoother than on previous º ³
³º albums. She doesn't spend so much time singing º ³
³º at the highest end of soprano, which is a shame º ³
³º as that is arguably her greatest strength, but º ³
³º overall she's very convincing on this record. º ³
³º º ³
³º My one complaint about Tears of Silence is that º ³
³º there aren't really any stand-out moments. º ³
³º Everything is in the range of good to great, but º ³
³º nothing reaches the level of spectacular. º ³
³º There's nothing like 'Touch of Your Hand' from º ³
³º Secret Passion, or the title-track from Queen of º ³
³º Light. Sure, there aren't any particular songs º ³
³º that I'd like to forget about either, but like I º ³
³º said with Children of Bodom's latest effort I º ³
³º Worship Chaos, I'd rather that there were some º ³
³º songs that are incredible than all of them being º ³
³º at the same level, even at the cost of some bad º ³
³º songs too. Especially given that there's an hour º ³
³º of content on here, it does get tiring when º ³
³º there isn't a single track that really blows you º ³
³º away. º ³
³º º ³
³º It has to be said though that Imperia have º ³
³º largely delivered again with Tears of Silence, º ³
³º and I'm glad that they've given me a good reason º ³
³º to listen to the band again. This album makes a º ³
³º good addition to their discography, and I'd º ³
³º recommend that you give it a spin if you like º ³
³º symphonic/gothic metal. º ³
