Amazon.co.uk Review
Compiled and mixed by Zed Bias, whose "Neighbourhood" typifies garage's stupifyingly clever mixture of underground hardcore bass and zingy pop, this is one of the best 2 step compilations released in 2000. Note 2 step as opposed to garage, the older version more closely allied to original US house and whose Britishness first came to light and then disappeared as quickly again as speed garage. 2 step is a lighter, more fractured, more hardcore and conversely more poppy form. SOTP steps away from some of the obvious 2 step chart hits and goes for killer cuts such as DJ Zinc's "138 Trek", Mr Vegas' "Western End" and Azzido Da Bass' nutty "Dooms Nigh". The commercial tracks that appear (Roy Davies Jnr's "Gabriel" and Artful Dodger's "Movin' Too Fast") come in remixed, recycled form, cutting away the saccharine that put them high in the kid zone. The reference to pirates is just about deserved, these are the tunes ***ling through the illegal bush radio network though without the complimentary MC, mobile phone shout outs, text messaging and static it's not quite the real thing. Pretty close though.--Jake Barnes
