Post Description
In 1986, on the suggestion of guitarist and friend Tommy Tedesco, Juan Carlos Quintero moved to Los Angeles to pursue session work and begin his career as a Los Angeles studio guitarist. What Juan Carlos didn't know is that he would be guiding his own Latin Jazz ensemble through one of the most formative periods of time for this style of jazz. In just 4 short years, amidst of what might be called a "Latin Jazz revolution" in the U.S., Juan Carlos Quintero has become a symbol of success in the L.A. Jazz community.
A native of Medellin, Colombia, Juan Carlos began playing guitar at age 8 after the certified "army brat" and his family moved to the United States. "The attraction towards the guitar was really quite natural", says Juan Carlos. "I started on a classical guitar my father picked up in Spain while living in Europe with my family. I remember working out a few chords and really getting into rhythms!"
After living in the U.S. for a few years, Juan Carlos enrolled in the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory in Boston to study with music notables William Leavitt, Gene Bertoncini, Gary Burton, Mike Gibbs and George Russell. "The time in Boston was truly unique", recalls Juan Carlos. "The objective wasn't just to play or write a tune but to explore the full potential of the music being created. It was the first time I really focused on the process of making music."
"Once I was in Los Angeles", continues Juan Carlos, "I put a band together and started playing the clubs around town. The response was really encouraging. People were incredibly supportive. I had the opportunity to open a couple of concerts for saxophonist Gato Barbieri and that did it. After that, I had no doubts as to why I was here!"
The music that you will hear on Juan Carlos' NOVA Records debut, JUAN CARLOS QUINTERO, is the culmination of several years of musical labor - warm, honest and truly inspirational - but in reality, represents only the first step in what will be an exceptional career in jazz.
Enjoy!
