³º Introducing Symphony X should almost be º ³
³º unnecessary. Symphony X have been a mainstay in º ³
³º both the progressive and the power metal scene º ³
³º for many years now, each album reaping heaps of º ³
³º great reviews and praise from critics and º ³
³º listeners alike. Their reach is far and wide, º ³
³º spanning neo-classical, progressive and groovy º ³
³º compositions. Fronted as always by the immensely º ³
³º talented Russell Allen, Underworld is an album º ³
³º that needs only a few listens to convince. º ³
³º º ³
³º Disregarding the quality or lack of the same of º ³
³º Russel Allen's many collaborations and º ³
³º appearances, including Jørn Lande, Ayreon and º ³
³º Adrenaline Mob, Symphony X will always feel like º ³
³º the vocalist's true home. His variation between º ³
³º gruff Anselmo-ish vocals and higher melodic º ³
³º vocals are in focus on almost each and every º ³
³º track, leaving no doubt that he is as essential º ³
³º a part of Symphony X's music as guitarist and º ³
³º main songwriter Michael Romeo. Where º ³
³º 'Iconoclast', the band's previous album, dealt º ³
³º primarily with mankind's promethean relationship º ³
³º with modern technology, Underworld has returned º ³
³º to the more mythological subjects as the albums º ³
³º from earlier in the band's career. º ³
³º º ³
³º Though not among the initial singles, the track º ³
³º 'Charon' feels like one of the strongest tracks º ³
³º on their ninth album. There are several strong º ³
³º tracks that I for one will be listening to for º ³
³º years to come, including 'Nevermore' and 'Kiss º ³
³º of Fire'. Symphony X are masters of the power º ³
³º ballad, and of course there is one on Underworld º ³
³º as well. 'Without You' is as strong a ballad as º ³
³º ever, but Underworld lacks the lengthy prog º ³
³º display of power that most have come to º ³
³º associate closely with the group. Almost every º ³
³º album up until now has had one of these tracks, º ³
³º but 'To Hell and Back' is the best we've got º ³
³º this time around. A mighty track, but not quite º ³
³º akin to the masterpieces like the Divine Wings º ³
³º of Tragedy and the Odyssey title tracks. º ³
³º º ³
³º In many ways Underworld feels like a mix of the º ³
³º band's three previous albums, combining the º ³
³º neo-classical progressiveness of The Odyssey, º ³
³º the lofty compositions of Paradise Lost, and the º ³
³º heaviness and powerful groove of Iconoclast. You º ³
³º always hear talk of "the difficult second or º ³
³º third album" when talking about a band's career. º ³
³º Never the impossible ninth album. Most bands º ³
³º have lost their flair long before reaching that º ³
³º point, and in that way it's refreshing to hear º ³
³º Symphony X release such a powerful and well º ³
³º carried-out album more than twenty years into º ³
³º their endeavour. Their output has been º ³
³º incredibly consistent quality-wise, and while º ³
³º Underworld may not be in their top 3, it comes º ³
³º incredibly close. Closer than many bands could º ³
³º ever hope to achieve this late in their career. º ³
³º This is unmistakably Symphony X as we know them. º ³
