Û This is not my first encounter with Superchrist, a Û
Û long standing US party metal outfit who have been Û
Û touring and releasing albums since the late 90s, Û
Û once through a local imprint here in the Boston Û
Û area. They've got a simplistic formula to their Û
Û heavy metal which draws upon influences heavily Û
Û from hard rock and metallic punk, especially the Û
Û 'dirtier' side of NWOBHM like Motörhead, Warfare, Û
Û Saxon and Tank. But don't let the admittedly Û
Û lighthearted nature of the band fool you into Û
Û thinking they're mere lazy derivatives, because Û
Û the Chicago mobsters have great tone and classic Û
Û songwriting skills that should continue to please Û
Û their installed fan base and perhaps even win over Û
Û the new, young audience into such throwback sounds Û
Û as those conjured by bands like Midnight, Û
Û Speedwolf or Abigail. Û
Û Granted, Superchrist eschew the blackened, wilder Û
Û vocals for something more along the lines of an Û
Û Algy Ward or Lemmy Kilminster. Dirty and Û
Û full-figured but quite clear, and it's a good fit Û
Û for the dense, ruddy cheeked tone of the guitar. Û
Û Drums shift between a standard hard rock clip as Û
Û on the opener "Take Me to the Graveyard" to Û
Û something decidedly more angry and punk like "Get Û
Û Lost" or "Run to the Night", and the same could be Û
Û said for the actual composition. As you'd expect, Û
Û complexity is not a part of this band's Û
Û vocabulary, the songs are written with at most 2-3 Û
Û riffs in mind, bluesy and brief flights of lead Û
Û work and a lot of genuine energy that transfers Û
Û directly to their stage performances. In this Û
Û regard, Holy Shit is not a whole lot different Û
Û than Defenders of the Filth or any of their past Û
Û full-lengths, though I think I preferred the Û
Û production here for its fluid abuse, and the Û
Û songs, while a bit restrained, seem substantially Û
Û stronger in their ability to teleport the listener Û
Û back to the formative, simpler times that inspired Û
Û them. Û
Û To be blunt: Superchrist is way retro, but they've Û
Û been doing it far longer than most of today's Û
Û upstarts, and there's a certain confidence and Û
Û experience that comes with the delivery of this Û
Û album, not to mention the writing. It would be Û
Û almost impossible for a band writing in this niche Û
Û to NOT come off to some degree derivative of the Û
Û many classic metal, hard rock and punk acts that Û
Û predated them, and Holy Shit is no exception. But Û
Û like the similar Midwest throwback artist Û
Û Midnight, they bring this tangible viridity to the Û
Û music that comes across entirely genuine, and as Û
Û the band want nothing more than to have a good Û
Û time, sharing some music and beers with the Û
Û audience, I'd say this is working very much as Û
Û intended, especially on the groovier tunes like Û
Û "Burn Again" with its old school Metallica spin or Û
Û "PAMF" which might have just as well been written Û
Û for Orgasmatron. It might not be anything Û
Û remarkable, but it doesn't need to be. Rock on, Û
Û Windy City soldiers. Û
