³º Recent years have found the Euro-power metal º ³
³º scene striding forward, as band after band º ³
³º emerge to vie for the crown of power metal º ³
³º masters. And yet, there's an argument that the º ³
³º few US outfits who have really made this style º ³
³º their own, actually do it better and with much º ³
³º more guile. Hence when Reverence ambushed us º ³
³º with When Darkness Calls in 2012, there really º ³
³º was reason to rejoice. A US act arriving to º ³
³º breathe new life into a sound that while steeped º ³
³º in the same heritage as those Euro bands, adds º ³
³º that little something that is unmistakably º ³
³º American and unmistakably classy. º ³
³º º ³
³º Three years later and with a lot to live up to, º ³
³º the band with links to Riot V, Jack Starr's º ³
³º Burning Starr, Tokyo Blade, Arrest, Savatage, º ³
³º Crimson Glory, Overland, Sanxtion and Inner º ³
³º Recipe return with Gods Of War. From the off º ³
³º it's crystal clear that Reverence aren't here to º ³
³º mess about, the album's opening title cut the º ³
³º sort of introduction many a more renowned act º ³
³º would give their riffing arm for. However from º ³
³º there what really hits home is that there's no º ³
³º fat around the edges of Gods Of War, every track º ³
³º a prime cut that leaves a succulent full flavour º ³
³º for many an hour afterwards. "Until My Dying º ³
³º Breath" punches hard, staccato guitar barking º ³
³º and biting ferociously, while the confident º ³
³º march of "Angel In Black" is a serious smash of º ³
³º power and drama all brought together through the º ³
³º peerless vocals of Todd Michael Hall – a singer º ³
³º who unsurprisingly has found himself much in º ³
³º demand since the Reverence debut made such an º ³
³º impact. However the guitar pair and writing duo º ³
³º of Bryan Holland and Pete Rossi match Hall every º ³
³º step of the way, the likes of "Heart Of Gold" º ³
³º possessing a scything twin guitar barrage and º ³
³º buzz-saw riff that a certain Maidens of Iron º ³
³º seem to shy away from these days, while the º ³
³º vocal arrangement in the chorus is simply jaw º ³
³º dropping. º ³
³º º ³
³º Bassist Michael Massie didn't feature on the º ³
³º band's debut, joining not long after but here he º ³
³º proves his worth, meshing seamlessly with the º ³
³º machine gun drumming from Steve 'Doc Killdrums' º ³
³º Wacholz, who is faultless throughout. And it's º ³
³º this confident power-house rhythm section which º ³
³º really allows the songs to reach the level of º ³
³º assertive maturity they do. "Choices Made" is a º ³
³º clever change of pace and focus, "Blood Of º ³
³º Heroes" on the other hand shows an ability to º ³
³º alter the pace not only from track to track, but º ³
³º within the same song; something many bands could º ³
³º take a leaf from. While "Splinter" slows things º ³
³º down, the frenetic pace intentionally checked to º ³
³º add shade to the blinding light found elsewhere. º ³
³º However having the ability to close out the º ³
³º album with the full force double hit of º ³
³º "Cleansed By Fire" and "Race To Obscene" proves º ³
³º the quality of this band once and for all. º ³
³º º ³
³º Gods Of War is an album that delivers from start º ³
³º to finish, inflicting immense punches of power º ³
³º metal majesty through every intricate twist and º ³
³º turn and leaving you genuinely amazed by the º ³
³º standard of what you've just heard. I'm not sure º ³
³º if Reverence are Gods Of War, but they're sure º ³
³º as hell masters of metal! º ³
