³º Description : º ³
³º º ³
³º Piece of Mind is the 2nd Iron Maiden album to º ³
³º feature Bruce Dickinson on vocals, the first º ³
³º with Nicko McBrain replacing Clive Burr on the º ³
³º drums, and the source of one of the band's º ³
³º biggest hits, "The Trooper". Strangely enough, º ³
³º these days, most of the tracks feel like º ³
³º forgotten gems, due to the fact that so many º ³
³º have been seemingly ignored in the band's live º ³
³º sets for a great many years now. But the bad º ³
³º tastes of band and audience aside, this is º ³
³º easily one of the best of Maiden's entire º ³
³º career, and certainly one of my personal º ³
³º favorites after Somewhere in Time or Powerslave. º ³
³º Each of the 9 tracks are splendid, powerful, º ³
³º melodic metal, and the album as a whole has a º ³
³º more reined in appeal than The Number of the º ³
³º Beast, giving it the slight edge in my opinion. º ³
³º º ³
³º Just about anything I've ever loved in Iron º ³
³º Maiden's music is here in spades. Wonderful º ³
³º lyrics that reflect upon religion, war, history, º ³
³º science fiction and mythology, drawing on a º ³
³º number of classic sources. More guitar hooks º ³
³º than a bait & tackle shop, and an excellent, º ³
³º crisp tone to boot. An excellent performance out º ³
³º of Dickinson, who had really meshed into the º ³
³º band's landscape by this point. And a production º ³
³º which does not sound to me as if it has aged a º ³
³º single day in 27 years. Add to that the dark º ³
³º atmosphere of emergent NWOBHM gone 'eavy as all º ³
³º hell, and a great if simple cover image º ³
³º featuring the most recognizable mascot in metal º ³
³º music. We have a winner. º ³
³º º ³
³º "Where Eagles Dare" is a sturdy track to open º ³
³º the album, with a lot of shuffle in its step. º ³
³º Twin guitars rambling out a passionate if º ³
³º somewhat predictable rhythm, and lyrics based on º ³
³º the 1967 novel of the same name, which was º ³
³º itself adapted to a film in '68 featuring º ³
³º Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. The airy º ³
³º nature of the melodies in the bridge makes for a º ³
³º fine if elegaic tribute to the story and the war º ³
³º in which it was fought. "Revelations" features º ³
³º one of the most simple and unforgettable verse º ³
³º rhythms of the 80s, with the perfectly placed º ³
³º little bass steps and the beautiful, simmering º ³
³º melodies that transform the tempo into a fist º ³
³º flying rager, and then down into a thoughtful º ³
³º tranquility. The song feels compelling and º ³
³º timeless, as if it could have been written and º ³
³º recorded in the late 60s or 70s and wound up º ³
³º much the same. "Flight of Icarus" tells the tale º ³
³º of its titular, tragic Greek character, and was º ³
³º also used a single for this album. It's more of º ³
³º a narrative than the previous tracks, with the º ³
³º riffs structured about the story. And who would º ³
³º ever forget Dickinson's shining chorus vocal? º ³
³º º ³
³º 'Fly, on your way, like an eagle, fly as high as º ³
³º the sun º ³
³º On your way, like an eagle, fly and touch the º ³
³º sun' º ³
³º º ³
³º At this point, the hammer drops and the balls º ³
³º fly out of their zippers as Maiden crushes º ³
³º through two of their more pronounced º ³
³º exclamations, beginning with "Die With Your º ³
³º Boots On", a self-determination anthem, and a º ³
³º nice little deconstruction of omens and the º ³
³º prophetic bullshit that fuels so much religious º ³
³º nonsense throughout our history. Smith and º ³
³º Harris have some swanky little backup vocals º ³
³º here, and the chorus is just the type of manly º ³
³º expression that makes you want to leap onto a º ³
³º motorcycle, or a horse, or something. A jet ski º ³
³º if you've got it. But people might look at you º ³
³º strangely if you're wearing boots on a jet ski. º ³
³º Speaking of boots, "The Trooper" follows, ready º ³
³º to plant both of them, leather and steel, º ³
³º straight up your arse. Basically the ultimate º ³
³º war metal song before there was 'war metal', º ³
³º maybe not as good as "Disposable Heroes" but it º ³
³º came first. How many metal fans out there º ³
³º learned their first guitar or bass riff from º ³
³º this song? How many people who don't even like º ³
³º metal music remember this song? How many have º ³
³º covered it? It's an indispensable classic, and º ³
³º just as brilliant as the pageantry requires. º ³
³º Trotting, equestrian guitar rhythms and spiky º ³
³º vocal latitudes, excellent popping bass beneath º ³
³º the lead, and the lead itself...gorgeous. º ³
³º º ³
³º The rest of the album is the half that I feel is º ³
³º sadly the more forgotten, but it's no less rapt º ³
³º or impressive. "Still Life" has a great melody º ³
³º that charges below the vocals, and Dickinson º ³
³º even has a robotic like tinge to the 'piece of º ³
³º mind' lyric. The dual guitars are brilliant º ³
³º here, especially as they quaff off into the º ³
³º slamming leads, and "Quest for Fire" follows º ³
³º suit with an epic hymn about early man and h
