³º While I despise the term ‘pirate metal’ on basic º ³
³º principal that lyrical content should not be the º ³
³º defining term of a genre, I sure do seem to love º ³
³º a lot of the bands associated with it. No matter º ³
³º what the genre, whether it be folksy power metal º ³
³º like Alestorm or extreme thrash like º ³
³º Swashbuckle, I’m a sucker for a fun gimmick as º ³
³º long as the musical side supports it. When it º ³
³º comes down to it though, the often overlooked º ³
³º Blazon Stone might be truest band to the roots º ³
³º of the ‘pirate metal’ sound. Don’t let their º ³
³º obvious old school Running Wild worship detract º ³
³º you though because Blazon Stone is one of the º ³
³º best power metal bands you’re not listening to. º ³
³º Their second album, No Sign of Glory, is only º ³
³º further proof of this. º ³
³º As it was just mentioned, Blazon Stone wears º ³
³º their Running Wild influence very obviously on º ³
³º their sleeves. This was apparent on their debut º ³
³º record Return to Port Royale and it’s still º ³
³º fairly obvious on this second one. Whether it’s º ³
³º the endless barrage of spunky and melodic lead º ³
³º guitar work or the ambitious speed of the album º ³
³º that blends traditional metal writing values º ³
³º with some power metal like excessiveness, No º ³
³º Sign of Glory has it. “Bloody Gold” is a great º ³
³º example of such as it never seemingly drops º ³
³º below a running pace with it’s never ending º ³
³º barrage of melodies and snapping drum work. It’s º ³
³º grounded by the traditional style melodic vocals º ³
³º with a soaring chorus of the title words and it º ³
³º works in spades all the way around. This style º ³
³º is present on almost all of the tracks too. º ³
³º “Fire the Cannons” is an epic power metal º ³
³º classic in the making as is the punchy, single º ³
³º worthy “No Return from Hell” with its chanting º ³
³º chorus. It’s hard not to be headbanging and fist º ³
³º pumping to the galloping rhythms on “Beasts of º ³
³º War.” Blazon Stone is full on with No Sign of º ³
³º Glory and their catchy writing carries the album º ³
³º for some great lengths – with or without º ³
³º originality to anchor it down. º ³
