³º With an introduction via a live album in 2012, º ³
³º Blinded By Tokyo, Brazil's Hibria has been on my º ³
³º radar for future reference. The live album º ³
³º displayed their version of traditional, even º ³
³º more European, melodic heavy power metal. The º ³
³º following Silent Rage found the band doing some º ³
³º modern experimentation with death and hardcore º ³
³º vocals, creating a slightly harsher sound. That º ³
³º kind of sucked but, overall, it wasn't a bad º ³
³º album.s º ³
³º º ³
³º With this year's self-titled Hibria, the band º ³
³º makes a return to earlier power metal roots, yet º ³
³º with some more interesting twists again. It º ³
³º seems with Hibria, they want to be like Forrest º ³
³º Gump's box of chocolates: "You never know what º ³
³º you're going to get." But there is the familiar. º ³
³º The foundation of Hibria's metal, across this º ³
³º album, is still melodic heavy power metal. º ³
³º You'll find the speed, sometimes a bit of º ³
³º thrashiness, general heaviness, all wrapped in º ³
³º melody, and topped of by lots of riffage and º ³
³º good, often technical, solos. More of this º ³
³º straight up power metal comes within Abyss, º ³
³º Tightrope, and Fame. The skill and thrill of the º ³
³º abundant guitar solos is quite tasty. º ³
³º º ³
³º Yet the real spice to many of the songs is º ³
³º something that can only be described a jazz º ³
³º metal fusion. In some places, notably in the º ³
³º mixture of guitar and bass with various rhythms, º ³
³º things sound almost funky. You'll catch this in º ³
³º the latter parts of Pain, Words, or in the º ³
³º slight bass breakdown in the second half of º ³
³º Ghosts, making a song with an average start º ³
³º conclude well. Even more specifically, the two º ³
³º best songs here are Pain and Ashamed, both of º ³
³º which include horns, notably saxophone and º ³
³º trumpet. The addition is slight in the latter º ³
³º third of Pain, but absolutely glorious in º ³
³º Ashamed. It sounds like a pint-sized version of º ³
³º the Miami horns was dropped into the mix. º ³
³º Fabulous. I'd like to hear more of this. What I º ³
³º don't want to hear more of is vocalist Iuri º ³
³º Sanson doing his dumbass harsh vocals as within º ³
³º Legacy. He sounds horrid; the song is horrid. º ³
³º Otherwise, Hibria has delivered some fine º ³
³º progressive power metal once more, and you gotta º ³
³º dig those horns. Recommended. º ³
