:: An album like H7 is proof positive that a relentless drive ::
:: for originality (replete with frequent detours into off- ::
:: kilter musical territory) isn't always needed in order to ::
:: make a great album. Sometimes a meat-and-potatoes, ::
:: pretence-free approach to song-writing is just what the ::
:: doctor (or in this case, the Devil) ordered, so if you like ::
:: your black metal on the traditional side you might as well ::
:: stop wearing socks right now because Blodhemn will blow them ::
:: clean off every time. ::
:: ::
:: Hailing from Bergen, Blodhemn is the brainchild of multi- ::
:: instrumentalist Invisus and H7 is only his third release ::
:: under the Blodhemn banner in the ten years this project has ::
:: been active. Bands peddling this tried & trve brand of black ::
:: metal are a dime a dozen of course and it should go without ::
:: saying that hailing from the same city as the likes of ::
:: Immortal, Gorgoroth and Taake will invariably add extra ::
:: pressure on Mr Invisus to carve out his own little niche for ::
:: himself, and in this regard this album definitely gets the ::
:: job done. Said "job" doesn't really imply any attempts at ::
:: reinventing the wheel, as Invisus seems perfectly content to ::
:: channel the everything that made (and continues to make) the ::
:: abovementioned bands such highly revered black metal ::
:: institutions. Whether it's the raw malice of Gorgoroth, the ::
:: riff/gallop heavy rumble of contemporary Immortal or the ::
:: rich atmospherics of Taake, Invisus proves himself more than ::
:: adept at tapping into these influences and twisting them ::
:: into a highly enjoyable brand of melodically sound black ::
:: metal that practically screams N-O-R-W-A-Y. ::
:: ::
:: No one element ever dominates the other, resulting in a ::
:: well-balanced and quite fleshed-out album. As conservative ::
:: as these tracks are they never collapse into the kind of ::
:: repetition that is so often associated with the genre, with ::
:: numbers like "Slettet av tid" and "Holmengraa" serving as ::
:: excellent examples of speedy and unabashedly melodic Taake- ::
:: style black metal (the former) and slow burning ::
:: counterpoint-driven black metal treading a delicate line ::
:: between majesty and melancholy (the latter). The ::
:: aforementioned Immortal influence is particularly evident on ::
:: "Evig heder," which packs the same gallop, grit and melody ::
:: as At the Heart of Winter. The strong melodic dynamic ::
:: undercurrent of the album effectively precludes things from ::
:: getting overly grim - so fans of Strid and old Darkthrone ::
:: better look elsewhere for their kicks - but if you fancy ::
:: vibrant riff-driven black metal delivered with an almost ::
:: Punkish insistency then H7 should be acquired in all haste. ::
:: It's sticks to the basics but it does so extremely fucking ::
:: well. ::
