ÛÛ In the 21st century, it is not uncommon for one of the ÛÛ
ÛÛ harsher black metal bands to boast that "no keyboards ÛÛ
ÛÛ were used on this album". That is their way of bragging ÛÛ
ÛÛ that they consider themselves black metal purists and are ÛÛ
ÛÛ distancing themselves from the more musical and melodic ÛÛ
ÛÛ bands that comprise the symphonic black metal school of ÛÛ
ÛÛ black metal. But when Marduk recorded Those Of The ÛÛ
ÛÛ Unlight back in 1993, black metal wasn't as diverse as it ÛÛ
ÛÛ would later become; therefore, the more abrasive and ÛÛ
ÛÛ brutish black metallers didn't feel a need to tell you ÛÛ
ÛÛ what set them apart from keyboards-loving black ÛÛ
ÛÛ metallers. And the word "brutish" definitely describes ÛÛ
ÛÛ Those Of The Unlight, which maintains the spirit of ÛÛ
ÛÛ rawness that characterized its predecessor, Dark Endless. ÛÛ
ÛÛ Granted, Those Of The Unlight isn't as extreme as the ÛÛ
ÛÛ amelodic grindcore bands that were raising hell in the ÛÛ
ÛÛ late '80s and early '90s -- the tunes on this 1993 ÛÛ
ÛÛ recording, unlike the grindcore material of death metal's ÛÛ
ÛÛ lunatic fringe, have actual song structures -- but at the ÛÛ
ÛÛ same time, no one will mistake this album for symphonic ÛÛ
ÛÛ black metal. It's too rough and tumble; too jagged, too ÛÛ
ÛÛ primal. Those Of The Unlight is also mildly uneven; it ÛÛ
ÛÛ isn't as consistent as some of the Marduk albums that ÛÛ
ÛÛ came later. 2005's Plague Angel on Candlelight, for ÛÛ
ÛÛ example, is actually a stronger, more consistent effort ÛÛ
ÛÛ than Those Of The Unlight. Nonetheless, this album has a ÛÛ
ÛÛ lot going for it despite its imperfections. ÛÛ
