ÛÛ Merrimack is one of the most poignant and sophisticated ÛÛ
ÛÛ acts of the French underground. Melody is utilized in ÛÛ
ÛÛ contrast with dissonance and intelligent, atypical ÛÛ
ÛÛ songwriting to produce this furious and unpredictable ÛÛ
ÛÛ force which marries the old and new. Epic is not merely a ÛÛ
ÛÛ descriptor, but a living and breathing mentality shed by ÛÛ
ÛÛ this disc and birthed by the organic songwriting of a ÛÛ
ÛÛ meek five-piece. ÛÛ
ÛÛ "Of Entropy And Life Denial" digs into your skull with a ÛÛ
ÛÛ stellar intro consisting of subtle blast-beats and ÛÛ
ÛÛ clinging melodies in the vein of Deathspell Omega. ÛÛ
ÛÛ Atmosphere is not something which this band works towards ÛÛ
ÛÛ or attempts to place on the front burner, it simply is ÛÛ
ÛÛ shoved directly into your face like a sword being plunged ÛÛ
ÛÛ into supple flesh. The guitar-work fades and the drumming ÛÛ
ÛÛ ceases as silence fills the void, forming the calm before ÛÛ
ÛÛ the storm as "Seraphic Conspiracy" kicks things into high ÛÛ
ÛÛ gear, uniquely conveying a sense of chaos and disorder ÛÛ
ÛÛ which grasps your body and does not let go. ÛÛ
ÛÛ Merrimack translates as "Infinite Depths" in the Celtic ÛÛ
ÛÛ language. This is quite literal, as the song structures ÛÛ
ÛÛ here are quite unique and erratic in terms of flow while ÛÛ
ÛÛ maintaining a consistent level of quality. Perversifier ÛÛ
ÛÛ and Feyd supply the Darkthrone and Burzum derivative ÛÛ
ÛÛ riffing that is firmly planted in the mid-paced, which is ÛÛ
ÛÛ not altogether new. The material is solid, but the ÛÛ
ÛÛ guitars themselves are not why this album is to be ÛÛ
ÛÛ praised. Rather, the arrangements feature the melody and ÛÛ
ÛÛ rhythm in an unnerving way which does not simply utilize ÛÛ
ÛÛ atmosphere but wholeheartedly manifests it. It has that ÛÛ
ÛÛ insipid mood which we all felt upon our first spin of ÛÛ
ÛÛ "Under A Funeral Moon"; that spark which is so goddamn ÛÛ
ÛÛ hard to recreate and so opaque that its existence cannot ÛÛ
ÛÛ be questioned. One must certainly recognize the excellent ÛÛ
ÛÛ breath afforded by the production as a staple in the ÛÛ
ÛÛ accomplishment of this effort. Every instrument is ÛÛ
ÛÛ uniquely clear and spacious while retaining that ÛÛ
ÛÛ distorted and raw (to a degree) feel. This is clarity ÛÛ
ÛÛ without sounding bombastic ! ÛÛ
ÛÛ The haunting sound is supplemented greatly by the ÛÛ
ÛÛ performance of vocalist Terrorizt. His rasps and wailing ÛÛ
ÛÛ spite are not altogether unique, but there is this nice ÛÛ
ÛÛ delay effect which gives the impression of an echoing ÛÛ
ÛÛ cave. This element combines well with the brutal and ÛÛ
ÛÛ surprisingly accomplished battery of Necrolith. The ÛÛ
ÛÛ amount of time changes and tempo shifts found within are ÛÛ
ÛÛ frightening for a Black Metal project but achieve a great ÛÛ
ÛÛ deal in maintaining your attention a
