The whole film is set in and around a bird-hide on the Suffolk marshes owned by Roy Tunt (MacQueen), a middle-aged, obsessive-compulsive bird watcher, who needs one more "tick" (the Sociable Plover) to complete the entire British List. He is unexpectedly joined by a dishevelled and tattooed stranger, who introduces himself as Dave John (Campbell). After an uncomfortable start, the pair build up a rapport, share lunch and a drink and discuss a wide variety of things. Roy tells David that he used to work in a poultry factory and that his wife left him for another man. After this it is revealed that a murder has taken place in the local area. This is found out when the walkie-talkie that Roy has picks up the police line. A message is sent through about a murder by a male fitting David's description. At first, the audience is made to believe that it is Dave John, as we discover that Dave is carrying a gun. The gun falls out of his pocket when he drops off to sleep and Roy takes it. However, the murderer turns out to be Roy when he confesses to David that he murdered his wife and her partner then disposed of their bodies in the poultry factory using the mincer to turn them into paste that was in the sandwiches that David ate earlier. Roy then reveals his plan to blow up the police helicopter that is looking for him on the marsh. There then ensues a fight between David and Roy in which David steals his gun back and kills Roy.
