Û Û Û Û
Û Û Good death metal is like good chicken. You've had it Û Û
Û Û before, or something very much like it, but it's still so Û Û
Û Û good, it's filling and tasty, goes great with beer, so what Û Û
Û Û the hell, why not go for some chicken instead of that fancy Û Û
Û Û new dish that is ever so complicated to make but somehow Û Û
Û Û unsatisfying (sounds like tech-death doesn't it! How Û Û
Û Û droll). Headhunter D.C. is the very best flame grilled, Û Û
Û Û marinaded in some spicy-ass sauce. Û Û
Û Û Nose-dive guitar squeals, deliciously over-the-top thrash Û Û
Û Û solos and bludgeoning chugging: the vicious guitars of Û Û
Û Û Paulo Lisboa and Fabio Nosferatus are one of the main Û Û
Û Û weapons of the hungry beast that is Headhunter D.C., the Û Û
Û Û other being the ridiculously good drumming of Daniel Û Û
Û Û Brandao. The latter's cacophonous fills, tumbling rolls and Û Û
Û Û neck-snapping charges provide the tough backbone that a Û Û
Û Û top-class death metal album needs. Initially I grew weary Û Û
Û Û of his propensity toward blastbeats in many of the songs, Û Û
Û Û which as a dominant style of drumming can detract from Û Û
Û Û otherwise excellent death metal (an occasional grumble with Û Û
Û Û Incantation, for example). However, as the album rolls on Û Û
Û Û and as do subsequent listens, the talent behind the kit Û Û
Û Û becomes obvious; thick, crunchy and above all never Û Û
ÛÛ becoming background noise, always at the forefront of the Û Û
Û Û carnage. Û Û
Û Û The main beef I have with this succulent chicken is the Û Û
Û Û vocals. As often as they are brilliant sepulchral growls Û Û
Û Û they are rasps that fail to complement the music properly. Û Û
Û Û I have plenty of time for some high-register grating rasps Û Û
Û Û in the style of a Schuldiner, a Tardy or a Van Drunen. Û Û
Û Û These squelchy Belphegor-like ones seem a waste of time Û Û
Û Û though when Sergio Baloff proves that he is capable of a Û Û
Û Û truly stomach-turning growl. Some more interesting moments Û Û
Û Û are the chants on 'Contemplation (to the fire)' and the Û Û
Û Û title track, that reinforce the occult atmosphere of the Û Û
Û Û record. Û Û
Û Û The concept of the album seems to be that Headhunter D.C. Û Û
Û Û are preaching their unholy craft to some kind of rabid Û Û
Û Û crowd, with the Dimmu Borgir-style symphonic intro finding Û Û
Û Û Baloff calling out his evil libations to the sound of Û Û
Û Û orgiastic applause, and the final song 'Long Live The Death Û Û
Û Û Cult' featuring many breaks that allow further riotous Û Û
Û Û crowd noise to be heard. In between these sinister Û Û
Û Û scene-setting moments however are nine tracks that showcase Û Û
Û Û the band's true motive. That being thrash-injected death Û Û
Û Û metal adrenalin that shares several qualities with Vader in Û Û
Û Û their '90s years, with humming tremolo riffs fighting for Û Û
Û Û space with razor-edged catchy riffs and whirring solos. One Û Û
Û Û of the songs is a cover of Thrashmassacre's 'Angelkiller', Û Û
Û Û that fits in pretty seamlessly with everything else on Û Û
Û Û offer. 'Stillborn Messiah' and several other tracks feature Û Û
Û Û breakdowns, but not that boring stop-start crap you get in Û Û
Û Û metalcore and such, these are well-placed atmospheric Û Û
Û Û transitions between solos and other exciting stuff. Û Û
Û Û Amongst the current renaissance of old school death metal Û Û
Û Û spearheaded by Razorback Records, Headhunter D.C. combine Û Û
Û Û the old school venom with a touch of thrash and black metal Û Û
Û Û to keep their sound grounded in the 21st century. Thing is, Û Û
Û Û the album might be a bit hard to find. So why make the Û Û
Û Û effort to hunt it down instead of many quite similar albums Û Û
Û Û you might find with less effort? Despite some vocal flaws, Û Û
Û Û these Brazilians make themselves known with a welcome Û Û
Û Û amount of instrumental energy and passion, qualities Û Û
Û Û sometimes lacking from more mainstream death metal, and a Û Û
Û Û talent for making each song distinct while using the same Û Û
Û Û elements. Well worth tracking down. Û Û
